How to choose a Galaxy CB Radio

What Galaxy CB radio is right for me?

The first thing you should ask yourself when purchasing CB radio is where I plan on mounting it. That’s probably the largest determining factor due to the fact that if you want to mount it in a particular location and the radio is physically two large it simply won’t work. The good thing is Galaxy offers radios in a couple of different sizes depending on the location that you wish to mount. Currently Galaxy offers three radios in the cobra 148 style chassis. These radios are the Galaxy DX 949, DX 959 and DX 939. If that’s too large for the location that you wish to mount the radio they also have three radios built a smaller chassis similar in size to the cobra 29. These radios are the DX 919, DX 929, and DX 979. As you can see Galaxy CB Radios are available in a couple different sizes so chances are will you find one that will fit where you wish to mount.

The next question you ask yourself is do you want sideband if you do you have a couple different options those would be the DX 949, DX 959, and DX 979. The DX 949 and 959 are very similar the main difference being the DX 959 has a frequency counter. If you are going to be talking a lot of sideband a frequency counter is nice to have as being on frequency on sideband is more critical than am. The other two sideband galaxy radios the DX 949 and DX 979 do have the option of using an external frequency counter so if those are radios that you’re interested in you can use one. If you’re looking to mount the radio into smaller location the DX 979 would be an excellent choice and he doesn’t like you said before have an external frequency counter Jack. A nice feature the DX 979 has is the starlight back with faceplate this makes night operation much easier and much safer.

Now if you’re just going to be talking on a.m. there are three Galaxy radios that are good choices. Those would be the galaxy DX 919, DX 929 and DX 939. The smaller of those radios being the DX 919 and DX 929 the main difference between those two radios is the starlight backlit face. If it were me I would opt for the DX 929 simply because of the backlit face it makes night operation a lot easier. Now sizes and a huge concern the DX 939 is a very good choice. This radio has the starlight backlit face and frequency counter and a ton of other features. This radio does a nice job of showcasing some of the other features that are typically only found on Galaxy’s10 meter line of radios. Another thing it has is a three year factory warranty something that hasn’t been found on galaxy radios in the past. No matter which Galaxy radio you go with the really isn’t a bad choice. All of their models offer excellent performance and a quality product.

History of CB Radios

An efficient tool for short distance communication, Citizens Band or CB Radios can be used without any license. It’s very handy for both personal and business use. You can chat with your buddies or get emergency traffic details through a CB. This powerful device has many unique features and has been able to grab the public’s attention since its invention.

As far as the history of CB radios is concerned, its origin can be traced back to 1945. It was invented by Al Gross, the person who also introduced us to the walkie-talkie. He established the Citizens Radio Corp. During 1940’s when UHF technology was not developed to the extent that radios could be mass sold at cheap prices, the company put on sale the Class B compact radios for the consumers. The Class D edition of CB Radios came to the market in 1958 at 27 MHz. This upgraded CB Radio had 23 channels, which later on grew to 40 channels in 1977.

In 1973, the company made a petition to open Class E CB Radio at 220MHz. But, it was rejected by the amateur radio companies and others. Although this incident didn’t go well the success of CB Radios continued to grow unhampered.

During 1960’s, the popularity of CB Radio increased among plumbers, carpenters and electricians. Gradually, truckers and non-professionals also started using this service. As a result, the prices of CB radio service came down to a considerable extent leading to further improvement in its technology.  This phase was a milestone in the history of CB Radios. From there onwards, this technology became the choice of many professionals and the public too.

Another turning point in the history of CB Radios took place in the year 1973 when the oil crisis led to the hike of gas prices. The US government started a nationwide 55 MPH service. The scenario got worse with fuel crisis. During this time, CB Radios were used to get information if the particular gas station had gas or not. Since the speed limit was also lowered, users could now use their radios to inform others if any police car had passed by them.

Earlier, use of CB Radios required a license. But, gradually, this rule was changed. In the history of CB radios, the two important eras were 1970s and 1980s. During this period, people used CB for chatting and messaging much like today’s online messaging.
